Fouzia Menaceri (فوزية مناصري), born Fouzia El Kader in Algeria in 1940, died in Algiers on 10 September 2019, aged 79. At 25, with no acting background, she was cast by Gillo Pontecorvo in his landmark 1966 docudrama The Battle of Algiers, playing resistance fighter Hassiba Ben Bouali. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and is widely regarded as one of the most important political films ever made. Despite Pontecorvo's encouragement, she never returned to acting after this single role.
Fouzia Menaceri died on September 10, 2019 in Algeria at the age of 79; her family announced her death through social media.
In 2018, Menaceri appeared in the television documentary L'Histoire du film La Bataille d'Alger directed by Salima Agara, filmed on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cult film.
