Ettore Scola (1931-2016) was an Italian film director and screenwriter who moved fluidly between comedy and social satire. His film Le Bal (1983) is among his most distinctive works: set in a Parisian suburban dance hall across nearly fifty years, it tells its story entirely without dialogue, through dance, pantomime and music.
