Eli Roth (born 1972, Newton, Massachusetts) is an American filmmaker and actor whose name is synonymous with extreme horror. His debut Cabin Fever (2002) sparked a bidding war among seven studios at the Toronto Film Festival and became Lionsgate's top-grossing film of 2003. Hostel (2005), shot partly in the Czech Republic, earned over $80 million on a budget of under $5 million and cemented his reputation as a key figure in the so-called torture porn wave. He has collaborated closely with Quentin Tarantino, appeared in Inglourious Basterds, and in 2025 launched his own independent label, The Horror Section.
Roth's slasher Ice Cream Man, made for 5.5 million dollars independently through The Horror Section, entered cinemas on August 7, 2026 on more than 2,000 screens in North America.
Roth announced a partnership with rapper Nas: their companies will jointly develop film and television projects in the horror genre.
Roth confirmed in an interview with Geek Vibes Nation that Ice Cream Man is his craziest film to date - he wants to surpass Hostel and The Green Inferno with it.
Roth signed a contract with German production company Construction Film: a German-language remake of Knock Knock and an original giallo project Final Cut with Veronica Ferres are in the works.
In March 2025, Roth launched the independent studio The Horror Section focused on distributing unrated horror films in cinemas worldwide.
