About

Conrad Veidt (1893-1943) was a German actor whose career spanned Berlin Expressionism and Hollywood wartime drama. His portrayal of the somnambulist Cesare in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) made him an international star, and his role as the grinning Gwynplaine in The Man Who Laughs (1928) visually inspired the comic-book Joker. After leaving Nazi Germany with his Jewish wife in 1933, he settled first in Britain and then in the United States, where he played Major Strasser in Casablanca (1942) - as the highest-paid actor in the cast.
