Chieko Baishō (倍賞千恵子, born June 29, 1941 in Tokyo) is a Japanese actress, singer and voice actress whose career spans more than six decades and over 180 film roles. She became a household name as Sakura in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo series (1969-1995), appearing in all 48 installments alongside Kiyoshi Atsumi. She gained international recognition as the voice of Sophie in Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle (2004) and through lead roles in PLAN 75 (2022) and TOKYO Taxi (2025), both directed by Yōji Yamada.
Baishō will appear in the war romantic drama Ano hoshi ga furu oka de, kimi to mata aitai (premiere August 7, 2026), a continuation of the Japanese hit Ano hana.
Baishō won the Best Actress award at the 49th Japanese Academy Prize for the film TOKYO Taxi - for the first time in 45 years and at age 84 broke Kiki Kirin's age record in this category.
The film TOKYO Taxi (directed by Yoji Yamada) starring Baishō debuted at the top of the Japanese box office.
Baishō received the Golden Mulberry award (lifetime achievement award) at the 25th Far East Film Festival in Udine.
The film PLAN 75 starring Baishō had its premiere in Cannes and became Japan's candidate for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category.
