Burl Ives (1909-1995) was an American folk singer, actor, and storyteller whose career ran for more than six decades. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 1958 western The Big Country and created the role of Big Daddy in the original Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. As a musician he brought traditional folk songs into the American mainstream, and his 1964 Christmas recordings - above all 'A Holly Jolly Christmas' - continue to chart every holiday season.
An extensive compilation 'Greatest Hits and Finest Performances' (57 tracks) was released on Geffen Records/UMG.
The Christmas album 'Have a Holly Jolly Christmas' regularly returns to international hit charts - in 2019-2023 it reached, for example, 27th place in Lithuania and 47th place in Sweden.
