Brahim Hadjadj (1934-1996) was an Algerian actor whose name is inseparable from the role of Ali La Pointe in Gillo Pontecorvo's war drama The Battle of Algiers (1966). Shot in a documentary style on the actual streets of Algiers, the film won the Golden Lion at Venice and received three Oscar nominations. Hadjadj came to the role with no acting training whatsoever - Pontecorvo was looking for naturalness and spontaneity rather than craft. After the film's international success he became the face of Algerian cinema, going on to appear in L'opium et le bâton (1971) and Chronicle of the Years of Fire (1975).
