Billy Wilder (1906-2002) was an Austrian-born American director, screenwriter, and producer whose career spanned more than fifty years and sixty films. Born in Sucha in what was then Austria-Hungary, he fled the Nazi rise to power and eventually settled in Hollywood, where he became one of the defining voices of the studio era. He worked with equal authority in film noir and comedy, and over his career collected six Academy Awards from twenty nominations.
