William James Murray (born September 21, 1950) is an American actor and comedian who rose to fame on Saturday Night Live before starring in a string of defining comedies - Ghostbusters (1984), Groundhog Day (1993) - and later earning an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for Lost in Translation (2003). A long-running collaborator of Wes Anderson, he has appeared in nearly every Anderson film since Rushmore (1998). Since 2025 he has also toured the US as frontman of the blues outfit Bill Murray & His Blood Brothers.
Murray delivered a farewell speech at the Siena Heights University commencement in Michigan and received an honorary doctorate from the institution, which is ending its 105-year history.
Murray attended the world premiere of The Phoenician Scheme at the Cannes Film Festival, where he played the role of God - his tenth (or eleventh) collaboration with Wes Anderson.
The Phoenician Scheme was released in cinemas in the USA and Germany and earned over 39 million dollars worldwide.
Murray returned to Saturday Night Live for the occasion of the show's 50th anniversary, where he rated his favorite Weekend Update hosts.
Murray launched a tour with the band Bill Murray & His Blood Brothers with two sold-out concerts at Chicago's Thalia Hall and continued performances in other American cities throughout the year.
