Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799–1837) was a Russian poet and writer regarded as the founder of modern Russian literature. His novel in verse Eugene Onegin served as the basis for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's opera of the same name. Pushkin died at the age of 37 following a duel.
