Alan Rickman (1946-2016) was a British actor and director whose career stretched from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Hollywood blockbusters. Global audiences came to know him as the cold-blooded terrorist Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988) and as Professor Severus Snape across all eight Harry Potter films (2001-2011). His awards haul included a BAFTA, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award - most notably for playing Rasputin in the 1996 HBO television film.
