Alain Resnais was a French film director and a key figure of the French New Wave, celebrated for his formally innovative features such as Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and Last Year at Marienbad (1961). Early in his career he also directed several documentary short films, including Gauguin (1950), a portrait of the Post-Impressionist painter.
