Bathory war eine schwedische Extreme-Metal-Band, die Thomas Forsberg alias Quorthon 1983 in Vällingby gründete und bis zu seinem Tod 2004 als Soloprojekt führte. Mit den frühen Alben legte er das Fundament des skandinavischen Black Metal; mit Hammerheart (1990) und Blood on Ice (1996) schuf er den Viking Metal als eigenständiges Genre. Das Buch Lords of Chaos bezeichnete Bathorys erste vier Alben als "Blueprint für den skandinavischen Black Metal". Nach Quorthons plötzlichem Herztod im Juni 2004 löste sich die Band auf.
Das Tributprojekt Blood Fire Death - A Tribute to Quorthon and the Music of Bathory trat beim Mystic Festival in Danzig auf (4.-7. Juni 2025).
Das Festival Brutal Assault kündigte eine All-Star-Tributaufführung Blood Fire Death mit Mitgliedern der Bands Enslaved, Aura Noir, Watain, VLTIMAS und Mayhem an.
Beim Festival Beyond the Gates in Bergen (31. Juli - 3. August 2024) fand eine großartige Tributaufführung Blood Fire Death mit ehemaligen Mitgliedern von Bathory und Musikern aus Emperor, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Mayhem, Satyricon und anderen Bands statt - anlässlich des 20. Jahrestags von Quorthons Tod.
Das Musikportal Nine Circles veröffentlichte eine umfangreiche Retrospektive des Albums Hammerheart (1990) und bezeichnete es als Grundstein des Viking Metal.
