In 1899, the murder of a young woman named Anežka Hrůzová in the city of Polná sparked a bloody slander that entered history as the Hilsner affair and was connected to the greatest manifestations of antisemitism on Czech territory during the 19th century. New evidence points to the actual perpetrator, but Czech courts refuse to clear the name of the Jewish youth Leopold Hilsner, who was unjustly accused of the murder.
